When I was planning my pictures that would ultimately form my portfolio for December 2019, I had considered creating tableaux of Extinction Rebellion protestors on the street during the October rebellion. This proved to be impractical as the situation was too fluid to set up these kind of pictures.
In January this year, I photographed a protest in Brighton. On reviewing the pictures, I found a resonance of my original idea in this picture.
XR members themselves were not keen on being seen as heroes or warriors, but I do believe there is space in which people who are actively campaigning for action on the climate can be photographed in a positive and uplifting way.
